We have just received a new model of Graupner Motors in 10.5 and 13.5 Turn variants. The reason for mentioning these motors is the build quality and extremely high strength rotors.

Most brushless rotors have a magnet strength between 1100 and 1300 gauss. However we have seen rotor strengths of up to 1600 gauss in recent GM Motors.

But 2 new Graupner motors have just arrived. The rotors in these brushless motors have a strength of 1800 gauss. The strength is so high that most people cannot turn the shafts of these motors. If you remember how strong some of the brushed motor magnets were then these are the same!. Incredible strength giving amazing braking power, when you slam the stick back. The quality is also very nice. Thick alloy can with quality material and soldering inside.

We have also tested these on a rev counter on the bench and give the same RPM figures of the lower gauss motors. Usually you will see a drop in RPM with the higher strength rotors but higher torque. These have everything.

Bottom line is that this kind of motor should develop high levels of torque, braking power and good speed.

Both variants are listed below.

10.5

13.5

Thanks for reading.

Recently a number of racers have asked what the best ESC’s are and what can be used for mod and stock racing. Below is what we consider to be the best available at present along with other questions answered.

1) GM 97168 120 Model
This ESC can be used for Mod and Stock racing. It has amazing punch (250 amp limit) and very good speed. It can be configured via the push button on the ESC with 9 profiles. However you can also program it via a USB cable which can be purchased separately. The software can be downloaded from the GM website. The programming software gives you maximum control over the ESC more than any other ESC on the market to date. Everything can be adjusted. This ESC has a built in heat sink with a fan also. Latest software firmware at time of writing this is 11.1.

2) GM 97164 90 Model
Same as above with slightly lower internal resistance with an amp limit of 200 as opposed to 250 as above. Hottest brushless wind can be 4.5T which is still a high end modified motor.

3) Tekin RS models – Pro model has a higher amp limit along with lower internal resistance.
Can be used for both mod and stock racing however the RS Pro can be used with the hotter winds! Limited programming functionality via the setup button on the ESC. However the Hotwire software can be downloaded and the purchase of the Hotwire USB unit will need to be purchased separately for more useful programming options. Not as many options can be programmed like the GM but the settings than can be changed are enough for 99% of racers out there. Criticised for having a lack of brakes at higher speeds, when the Turbo kicks in. But also this ESC has been highly praised for the amount of speed the motor develops. Extremely fast! This ESC has no heat sink visible and no fan. Very compact. Latest software firmware at time of writing is Vegas 203.

4) LRP 80910 SXX Stock Spec and Nosram 90910 Pearl Evolution Spec ESC (identical models bar the colour)
This ESC has been released recently however it was slightly tarnished with Version 1 and version 2 of the software installed to having slight issues. The latest incarnation has version 3 software which will be used for the life of this ESC.
No PC software is needed to program this ESC. Easily programmed with 2 buttons on the ESC. Bullet proof, with just main setting adjustments for drag brake, boost and feel. Everything else is automatic. Super smooth throttle response which delivers high RPM and excellent punch. Alot of racers love the simplicity of LRP ESC’s. This ESC has a built in heat sink and no fan. However a fan can be installed if you wish.

After visiting this track many times now, we believe it has some of the best facilities for indoor racing. Very large track with purpose built pit area and mains power. Bar next door and just on the outskirts of Newbury make it very easy location to get to.

Catering for 10.5, 13.5 brushless and also the equivalent brushed motors.

Some people have mentioned that when they take their LiPo packs off charge they do not show 8.4 volts which is what LiPo chargers generally cut off at.

The voltage of any battery will fall back once disconnected, so within a minute or 2 the voltage will be a bit down. However it will depend on the quality of the battery. Generally the voltage should stay above 8.30 to go and race

1) Make sure your power source for your charger is capable enough. The voltage of a power source (12volt battery or mains adapter) being lower than 12volts will not get your LiPo up to 8.4volts once charged. We have seen LiPo packs come off charge only reading 8.14volts because of a low voltage power source. The voltage of any battery will fall back once disconnected, so within a minute or 2 the voltage will be a bit down. However it will depend on the quality of the battery. Generally the voltage should stay above 8.30 to go and race.

2) Connectors. Make sure all connections going to your LiPo packs and connections going to your charger are tight and of good quality. The resistance will be much higher through poor quality connectors and will have an effect on the voltage being lower than expected on your LiPo once charged. The higher the resistance the worse off you are.

3) Good quality soldering. Make sure whenever you do soldering that solder is not just on the outside of the wire, but that it has penetrated through to give a lower resistance and better contact.

Thanks for reading.
